What a year 2021 was for policing. Whilst still having to deal with a pandemic, the service has had some odious characters come to light who committed horrendous offences.
They are a disgrace to the service and grossly undermining the great work we do every day. The press have not been short of material from the actions of a handful of individuals.
West Yorkshire Excellence
Regardless of this, my colleagues in West Yorkshire were being praised for their commitment and work ethic by the HMICFRS. An outstanding performance and something you should be proud of.
On top of this, Four West Yorkshire Officers were crowned the Winners of The National Police Bravery Awards 2021.
A personal thank you to Liz, Ant, Dan and Richard. What an incredible set of brave officers, who have demonstrated the very finest attributes of policing and are a true credit to the service.
It’s also been very challenging politically and we have seen plenty of empty platitudes given by the current Government.
But actions speaker louder than words and this came to the fore. The service was denied early access to the Covid Vaccine what was widely seen as a snub at the time, but it didn’t end there.
Further dismay and anger was felt at the pay freeze. Another year of a below inflation pay for those who had been subject to some of the most harshest situations on the front line. Another year of uncertainty for those who have been messed around in the pension debacle.
Our Priorities For You
What have West Yorkshire Federation been doing? Our priority remained maintaining all previous commitments through a challenging year.
We expanded our in-house counselling services, and have extended our availability of physio and sports massage therapy.
The Thin Brew Line Federation Welfare Van has been out to every district providing a quality cuppa and snacks to hard-working colleagues. It has assisted at major incidents within the force and continues to be a welcome break for colleagues.
We also invested in a trailer, which gives us greater capacity to serve hot food and drinks. It was sent to support our colleagues at the COP26 deployment.
It was such a success that other Federations are in contact with us to see how they can purchase their own.
Further still, we have part funded some welfare pods with the force. These will be deployed to major incidents to give staff comfort on those long scene guards.
We have maintained our commitments to our holiday homes and have seen growth in the use of these since our price restructuring.
This has made them even more affordable than commercial avenues, who have hiked their prices due to the staycation demand.
Bookings are virtually full to capacity over the next year and we envisage it will continue into 2022.
West Yorkshire Police Federation are in an excellent position, not by luck, but by good management and investment, and looking for efficiency in everything we do.
Looking After You
Locally, we will not be resting on our laurels, we will continue to review what we do and how we deliver for our colleagues.
We will sustain pressure on our local politicians to ensure that our members are looked after in respect of pay and conditions.
We will continue to do our bit by providing the best training and support to your local Reps, not losing sight of who we are and how we started on the journey.
Members come first.
Thank you for your continued support.
