Call For Sustainable Funding

Further investment in policing is required to reduce crime, according to West Yorkshire Police Federation Chairman Brian Booth.

Brian was talking to BBC Radio Leeds following the news of the Government giving more backing to officers to use stop and search.

He said: “We have to bear in mind that this is just one power, there is a lot of other things that we need to keep West Yorkshire safe.

“We need the sustainable funding, we need more police officers and this is just one small part that we seem to focus on with stop and search.”

Brian, who is a supporter of the use of stop and search, says that it is an effective model of policing but there are still some issues over backing the tactic.

He explained: “It’s an important tool in a police officer’s toolbox and I’m sick of this all the time being like a pendulum, one minute ‘please go out and stop and search’, next minute ‘stop, you’re doing this wrong, you’re doing that wrong’, it’s a bit of a nonsense really.”

Brian said that changes were required to arrest the growing knife crime rate.

He said: “We are in a knife crime epidemic, we need to do something and we need to do something now.”
