Statement from West Yorkshire Police Federation Chairman Nick Smart after Thomas Mair found guilty of the murder of MP Jo Cox.
Nick said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jo Cox MP and all those in the community affected by the awful events on 16 June this year.
“We also think of our brave West Yorkshire Police colleagues who – when faced with the unthinkable on that day – reacted with bravery, compassion, courage and commitment.
“Our unarmed colleagues went to work that summer’s day not knowing what they would face.
“When the call came in, they ran towards danger without a thought for their own safety.
“Two officers tried their very best to preserve life. Two others confronted an armed killer. Apprehending him before he could strike again.
“The trial heard of British policing at its finest.
“Our colleagues all deserve the highest of praise for their bravery that day. And we at West Yorkshire Police Federation will ensure their actions on that day are not forgotten.”
